“Outsider Art”

From Outsider Art Pages:

A basic definition of outsider art is creative works – paintings, drawings, sculptures, assemblages – by people who have little or no formal training in art and who produce art without regard to the mainstream art world’s recognition, marketplace, or definitions. These are people who make art for themselves or their immediate community, often without recognizing themselves as artists until someone informs them that they are making art. The term “outsider” remains a descriptor for work that is likely to reflect different motivations, histories and concerns than that generally produced by art school graduates.
